FACT CHECK: Sessions Has A Strong Women’s Rights Record

Sessions has consistently stood up for the rights of women and worked to bolster laws that protect women

January 10, 2017

In a tired political tactic that has become all too common, those on the left are trying to claim Sen. Jeff Sessions will not stand up for the rights of women. However, any examination of his record will show that throughout his career, Sessions has worked to protect the lives and dignity of mothers by supporting abortion in extreme cases of rape, incest, or life endangerment.

Sessions has also voted numerous times for the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) – voting for it in 2000, 2005, and a bipartisan alternative in 2012. As Sessions said in 2013, “I support the core functions of VAWA and have my entire life.” North Alabama’s Crisis Center’s Bill Farris said of Sessions:

FARRIS: I’ve known Senator Sessions for a long time and personally know that he’s not opposed to anything that would help reduce the amount of violence against women.

Not only did Sessions vote several times to reauthorize the Violence Against Women’s Act, he supported a version of the bill which pushed for stronger protections for women. The 2012 bipartisan VAWA bill Sessions voted for strengthened provisions in the Violence Against Women’s Act by  increasing penalties for sex offenders and dedicating more money to law enforcement agencies to help reduce the “backlogs of untested rape kits.”

The facts are clear – Sen. Sessions has consistently stood up for the rights of women and worked to bolster laws that protect women.
