While Patty Murray seeks to grandstand by calling on Betsy DeVos to release her tax returns, it’s important to make three points:

1: The Washington Post reported that only the “Budget, Finance, and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs panels – have the authority to require Cabinet picks to release their tax returns.

2. Both of President Obama’s nominees for Education Secretary, Arne Duncan and John King, never released their tax returns during the confirmation process.

Just because Sen. Murray stands with unions and opposes important education reform efforts, that doesn’t mean she has the right to change the rules and force DeVos to adhere to rules that earlier nominees did not have to follow.
