Day 1 Recap: Do Senate Democrats Even Realize What These Judiciary Committee Hearings Are About?

Their strategy is a testament to Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s unparalleled qualifications and judicial temperament – neither of which were called into question by Senate Democrats during today’s proceedings.

October 12, 2020

On the first day of Senate Judiciary Committee hearings for Judge Amy Coney Barrett, Republican Senators delivered a spirited defense of her qualifications while exposing the Democrats’ radical proposals.

Senator Ted Cruz aptly pointed out the lack of focus by Senate Democrats on Coney Barrett’s qualifications, instead attacking President Trump and their Republican colleagues: “To date of every Democrat who’s spoken, we’ve heard virtually not a single word about Judge Barrett.”

Senator Joni Ernst excoriated Senate Democrats for their assault on the faith of SCOTUS nominees:

“Your political opponents have made these religious attacks on nearly every Supreme Court candidate nominated by a Republican in the modern era.”

Senator Todd Young also exposed the reprehensible decision by Senate Democrats to attack Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s religious convictions:

“I can tell you that in Indiana and in much of the country, faith is viewed as an asset in a public servant, not a liability. “

Senator Ben Sasse provided Senate Democrats with a free American civics lesson, slamming their proposal to pack the Supreme Court if Judge Coney Barrett is confirmed:

“Court packing is destroying the system we have now, not reforming the system we have now.”

During a brief recess, Democratic Senator Mazie Hirono participated in an MSNBC interview to express Democrats’ desire to have a “serious discussion” about packing the Supreme Court and eliminating the filibuster.

Bottom line: Senate Democrats used virtually the entirety of their allotted speaking time to discuss the Affordable Care Act, seemingly not understanding the purpose of Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on Supreme Court nominees. Their strategy is a testament to Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s unparalleled qualifications and judicial temperament – neither of which were called into question by Senate Democrats during today’s proceedings.
