Audit Finds MoDOT’s Finances On Sound Footing
A recent audit of Missouri’s Department of Transportation found that the agency was on sound financial footing and had been a good steward of taxpayer dollars. The independent, annual audit was welcome news to the department as it had faced a funding crisis in previous years.
As noted by the RubinBrown, the firm that performed the audit:
In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the respective financial position of the governmental activities, each major fund, and the aggregate remaining fund information of the Missouri Department of Transportation as of June 30, 2016 and 2015, and the respective changes in financial position and, where applicable, cash flows thereof for the years then ended in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America.
MoDOT’s had fiscal health had preisouly faced scrutiny from taxpayers and elected officials:
Lawmakers and Missouri taxpayers have questioned how the department has used their operating budget for some time, citing thousands of dollars being used to fly commissioners around the state and a diversity training program which would’ve brought Muslim volunteers to speak to MoDOT employees about the Islamic faith. That training was canceled after state representatives contacted the department.
Last year’s audit found millions of dollars slated for the state road for maintenance had been improperly spent on “expenses unrelated to road maintenance.”
