The Department of Labor is out today with the latest jobs report and the U.S. economy added 304,000 jobs in January. Despite historic gains during the first two years of Trump’s presidency, 2020 Democratic presidential contenders have tried to downplay the successful economy:
Kirsten Gillibrand: “The American dream is for everyone. And it’s why we believe that when they declare victory at 4 percent unemployment, it is not good enough. Because 4 percent unemployment means an 8 or 9 percent unemployment in some cities for black women. It means a 16 percent unemployment rate for black men. It means young veterans coming out of Iraq and Afghanistan, a 20 percent unemployment rate. So our work really isn’t done.”
Kamala Harris: “There are those trying to spout all this misinformation, talking about how, ‘Oh, the economy is great. The economy is great.’…People are working, and guess what, they’re working two and three jobs to pay the bills. The economy is not working for working people.”
Both Gillibrand and Harris’ comments were fact checked by the Washington Post. According to WaPo, Gillibrand “managed to mangle three statistics in three consecutive sentences.” While Harris overstated the number of people working two or more jobs as “only 4.9 percent of employed people had multiple jobs.”
