Red-State Dems Face Pressure on SCOTUS Vote from Governors

July 26, 2018

Four red-state Democrats are facing increasing pressure back home to #ConfirmKavanaugh. The popular Governors of Alabama, Florida, North Dakota, and Indiana have all signed on to a letter encouraging the Senate to confirm Judge Kavanaugh:

  • Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has a 67-percent approval rating. The state’s Democratic senator is Doug Jones.
  • Florida Governor Rick Scott was polled with a 54-percent approval rating. Scott is challenging Bill Nelson for that Senate seat this cycle.
  • North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum also has 54-percent approval in his state. Senator Heidi Heitkamp is up for re-election this fall.
  • Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb holds a 52-percent job approval rating. Indiana’s Senator, Joe Donnelly, is also up for re-election.

Will these Senate Democrats side with the governors, who their constituents support? Or will they take their marching orders from Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and the liberal wing of their party?
