As the Supreme Court heard arguments on President Obama’s attempt “to offer temporary protection from deportation to more than 4 million undocumented immigrants,” Missouri is one of the few states that finds itself watching from the sidelines because Attorney General Koster has, yet again, refused to take a stand.

Like most hot-button topics, it’s not surprising that this is another issue where Koster has spent time on both sides of the debate.

In 2008, while he campaigned for the state’s top law enforcement position, Koster acknowledged that the Attorney General plays a “significant role” in the problem of illegal immigration. However, in 2014, when President Obama issued his immigration executive order, Missouri was one of only a dozen states to not join the fight challenging it. Even Governor Jay Nixon said Missouri’s decision to not join the suit against Obama “was up to the Attorney General,” and Koster still refused to act.

A grand total of 37 states “have weighed in on Obama’s unilateral immigration actions,” but thanks to inaction from Chris Koster, Missouri won’t have a voice in this important debate. This is just the latest example of Koster refusing to step up to the plate and take a stand because his focus is always on political implications, rather than what is best for his state. His insistence to consistently calculate what is best for him, instead of leading with conviction shows how he is not serving the people of Missouri’s best-interest as Attorney General and would not do it as Governor.
