Former Democratic Congressman and Acting Army Secretary Patrick Murphy implicitly criticized the Obama Administration’s approach to Iraq this morning when talking about the current threat posed by ISIS.

Noting the ongoing fight against ISIS, Murphy said “I think the lesson learned was, when we walked away, bad things happened, and bad things happened and Americans were killed.”

The panelists quickly confirmed that Murphy was talking about President Obama’s decision to leave Iraq early, which many believes has given rise to ISIS’s strength across the region.

Here’s the transcript and context of what The Secretary had to say this morning:

NICOLE WALLACE: Do the Russians make our job there easier or harder?

SECRETARY PATRICK MURPHY: Both, to be honest with you and I’m not trying to –

WALLACE: How?

SEC. MURPHY: Well it’s, one they have hit some of what we would like to consider targets in the area, but they’ve also hit some of the moderates there –

WALLACE: A lot of the moderates right?

SEC. MURPHY:  Yeah, yeah Nicole and listen, it’s not an easy solution, it’s not very black and white. But the reality of it is and I think the lesson learned was, when we walked away, bad things happened, and bad things happened and Americans were killed.

WALLACE: When we walked away by drawing a red line and not –

JOE SCARBOROUGH: When we walked away from Iraq?

SEC. MURPHY: Well I would say with Iraq and that’s why we had to go back in, and listen it’s not about American solution and that’s why we’re being much more thoughtful as we go in to build this partner capability, to build the Iraqi forces and also the Syrian forces to go after really the extremists in that area.
